SUDDENLY COLIN SAID, “MY HEARING AID IS GONE.” HE HAD THE NEW HEARING AIDS 2 MONTHS. I TOOK A CHANCE, CALLED AND ASKED MY DAUGHTER KIM, IF HER DON WOULD LOOK WHERE WE WERE PARKED IN THEIR YARD. THE PHONE RANG AND DON HAD FOUND IT. THE HEARING AID ARRIVED TODAY AT THE FARM. NOW COLIN WANTS TO PUT “DUCK” TAPE OVER HIS EAR AFTER HE PUTS IT IN.—–BOOK 4–“ROSE’S DREAM FULFILLED”–CHAPTER 52—ROSE’S VOICE WAS FIRM WHEN SHE ASKED FOR HER BUGGY TO BE BROUGHT TO THE HOSPITAL. SHE FELT UNSETTLED AND GUILTY. SHE ALSO ASKED THE SHERIFF TO COME TO THE CEMETERY. HER MIND WENT BACK TO THINKING THIS COUPLE COULD GIVE THE BABY NOTHING BUT A HARD LIFE. THEY HAD NO MONEY, NO EDUCATION. HOW WOULD THEY CARE FOR HIM? ROSE QUESTIONED THE COUPLE WHILE RIDING WITH HER TO THE CEMETERY. WHERE DO YOU LIVE? WHAT OCCUPATION DO YOU HAVE? HOW MANY OTHER CHILDREN DO YOU HAVE? SHE WANTED TO KNOW EVERYTHING ABOUT THEM. THE MAN SEEMED EAGER TO ANSWER ROSE’S QUESTIONS. SHE WAS LOOKING DIRECTLY AT SHERIFF LES. HE STOOD UP IMMEDIATELY KNOWING THE LOOK ON MYRA’S FACE THIS WAS NOT A SOCIAL CALL. MYRA TOOK A COUPLE STEPS INTO THE ROOM. HER EYES NEVER MOVED ONLY SLIGHTLY AND SLAMMED THE DOOR BEHIND HER. The other slaves had large families. When each baby was born, his mother was called on to deliver the baby. If the baby took all night to be born, she still needed to get to the field in the morning.
